A Retro Teen's Room for Girls
Do you remember the 60's? It was a time for tie dye, Woodstock, flower power, and peace symbols everywhere. The 60's was about hippies and although the 60's is gone the hippie fad is still around. Now it doesn't stay around, it comes and goes. For now it is the teen rage right now. If your teen is showing you signs of the 60's spirit then use that theme to decorate her room.
The sixties were known for their bold, striking colors. For her walls, use a combination of bright psychedelic colors to get the sixties mood right. You could also have a block design, on the walls, where each block is painted in a striking color different from the next. For this, just use masking tape to mark off your blocks, and then paint inside the tape and allow drying. Try not to overdo this by going on every wall. One wall done in this block art style will do just fine. Still on the walls, why not add a little flower power to complete the retro hippie touch. You may do this by painting or stenciling brightly colored daisies on her walls.
Now it's time to furnish her room. To do this you will need to keep in mind that in the 60's it was about being playful so you can use bean bag chairs or blow up chairs. Paint all wood furniture white. Next you want to take down the light fixture and add the disco ball. To finish the touch you want to add some 60's music so she can listen to it and get into the spirit. No retro room will be complete without a lava lamp. You can find a lot of retro decor at discount stores. Don't forget the incense sticks to place on her night stand to help her relax when she is listening to her music.
You want to place a shag rug on the floor. The 60's were well known for their looks in rugs and the shag look was very popular. You can get a jewel toned rug or psychedelic rug. You may find that a shag area rug balances the room out.
Add vinyl and classic rock album covers on the wall. This should be a variety of popular singers like Lennon and the Rolling Stones hanging on her wall.
For her cushion covers, begin a fun tie and dye project that even she can take part in. Tie and dye is an easy technique that any one can do at home. Get together with her and dye some white linen in striking bold colors to add fun to her room.
Remember that hippies believed in freedom of expression so in order to make her happy you will need to allow her to express herself too. This will make the room look wonderful and she will be very happy.
