Should You Buy A Waterbed?
A waterbed is a bed with hard sides that form a frame that will support a mattress with water, or else one that has a foam frame in a fabric encasement that surrounds the water filled mattress. Waterbeds were originally designed for invalids to help prevent pressure sores from being bedridden over time.
Most of the time, a waterbed has a heating device that is regulated by a thermostat. This thermostat can be adjusted to the user's preferred temperature. For most people, the comfortable temperature is 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Heating pads placed beneath the waterbed make this regulation of temperature possible. Most waterbed mattresses are made out of vinyl so it is best o keep a vinyl repair kit in handy in case the mattress is damaged.
The mattress may be purchased with one chamber or more. For a less wavy mattress, air can be incorporated with the water to lessen the movement. The one chamber unit is known as a free flow and it will create much movement as a person moves around. It may take some time to stop moving and may not be as easy to sleep on. Most people today will choose the more stable mattress with several chambers so it will not move as much, but still offer the benefits of a water bed. These may cost more money than the single chamber, but it will have less movement. Other materials are used to cover the mattress to reduce the amount of waves.
If anyone is looking to buy waterbeds, there are a few things to consider. Because water is heavy, a person needs to consider whether their floor is strong enough to hold a waterbed. Many times, a floor will need to be reinforced, particularly if it is on an upper story of a house. Not only are they heavy, they also use a bit of electricity to keep the water heated. A waterbed will consume somewhere between 500-2000 kWh yearly. They are also very difficult to move if the owner decided to rearrange the bedroom. A waterbed will have to be drained and disassembled then reassembled and refilled. Leaks are possible, and can be a hassle to repair. There are waterbed accessories that need to be purchased as well, such as heaters, mattress covers and protectors, and conditioning chemicals.
The great thing about waterbeds is how comfortable they are and how they mold to the body. They are great for those that have aches and pains. These types of beds reduce the amount of dust since the mattress is basically filled with water.
There are pros and cons to owning a waterbed and all of these should be considered carefully before a person decides whether purchasing a waterbed is the right choice for them.
