Enjoying the Kitchen for what it is
It's often said that if the kitchen looks clean, the rest of the house automatically does. The opposite is true. The rest of the house may be tidy, but if the kitchen is in a mess, the rest of the house looks trashed. It's so unfair! Kitchens are so difficult to stay on top of!
Kitchen bins are the worse. Just when you've cleaned the kitchen, you realize it still feels grotty, because the bin has not been taken out, or is overflowing in something unsightly. Even worse is when you go to open a drawer and you realize the handle is encrusted with someone unrecognizable. Its seems no matter how large or small our kitchens are, they can still manage to fall into disarray after only a few days of less than perfect attention.
Small kitchens are sometimes to blame for the difficulty in upkeep, but even big kitchens fall into chaos with all the storage space anyone could want. If we cook a lot we find we are constantly filling our fridges to overflowing, and our drawers are chock full of accessories.
However a kitchen is still a kitchen. It's a place where you cook, make a mess, wash up, put things away, and do a lot of living in. This is even without the inevitable papers and homework and who knows what that also ends up living in the kitchen for days at a time. A kitchen cannot be a kitchen and not be functioning at the same time in some sort of mess or post mess state. You could try not cooking in your kitchen, but then that would mean you were eating out all the time and spending too much money!
Why don't our kitchens look like the ones in the advertisements? The fridges with only a few select gourmet treats and a chilled bottle of wine? The ovens that are always in a state of perfection, and never actually used to cook, only to heat up gourmet treats. I think coming to terms with the functionality of a kitchen and doing your best to stay on top of the mess is the best you can do! In the mean time, enjoy the food, and put the kettle on!
