Not Quite As Good As I Was Hoping For – Cheap Dehydrator Review
We make a batch about every 2 weeks, and the dogs absolutely love it! The best thing is knowing there is no melamine in it! It comes with 2 fruit roll screen and 2 easy clean screens and 5 normal trays. The fruit roll screens are awesome. Very quiet and has a large capacity. There are obviously a couple things that I would improve, but I would never expect a product that works this well for this price to be perfect. I use it every weekend. So far I have only made jerky for hubby and dogs but they just love it. The first time I used it I combined numerous trays of sliced apples with a few trays of halved pears. There was too much moisture in the pears and that affected the apples.
All of the meals I made fit just fine inside my 700 ml titanium mug with some room to spare for stirring. It was great to be able to pack these meals in small, lightweight, reusable craft bags instead of the great big seal-a-meal bags, for what it's worth. I recommend this for anyone who likes to cook by using intense flavors – I have used the dried tomatoes on salads, in sauces, casseroles, etc. It is worth it if you're just doing tomatoes.
The fan does make noise but it's pretty quiet. I could still watch TV even with the Nesco running.
Can't beat the price, and my dehydrator has had only a few days' rest since I got it. It's been humid here so most things have to dry longer than usual. It can be kind of hard to hand wash, especially if you have nowhere to soak it. I find it helps to lay soaked, soapy rags over the trays for a while before washing.
I marinated my meat the night I got my dehydrator in the mail and used it the next day. Even though this was my first time making jerky it came out great! On Monday of this week it was "in Chicago" and I should receive it in the next day or so. I live 3 hours from the farthest part of Chicago and as of Thursday I have not received the replacement. Having a temperature dial that goes up to 160 degrees is very handy for making jerky. Otherwise you have to pre-cook the meat which seems like a huge pain in the butt. I read reviews and researched which dehydrator I thought would be the best. I have not used one before, but have always thought a dehydrator would be nice to have since I enjoy cooking with dehydrated fruits and vegetables.
I absolutely love the Nesco dehydrator. My old dehydrator had heat coils on the bottom and this one has the heat and fan on the top of the trays.
And if the kitchen is near the master bedroom and you're planning on leaving the dehydrator going overnight, you may find that the constant "whirr" sound disturbs your sleep. windshield crack.
