Rotary Lawn Mowers and Lawn Tractors Explained

When you finally decide on which rotary mower is best for you, you have to look into what you ultimately want and need out of a mower. Gas-powered rotary mowers should be divided into two options: walk-behind rotary mowers and riding mowers (also known as lawn tractors).

Walk-behind rotary lawn mowers can be broken down even more depending on whether they're self-propelled or push mowers. Prices between these types of rotary lawn mowers can vary enormously, but generally riding mowers are the most expensive, second to self-propelled mowers. Push mowers are consistently the cheapest, most likely because to make them move they require you to put your back into it and supply the man power.

Self-propelled rotary lawn mowers need the user to put pressure on a leaver to start the mower. When done so, the machine will jump into action – your only task from this point onwards being to steer the mower in the right direction. When the leaver is released, the mower blade stops spinning. Simple and effective. Often on more expensive self-propelled rotary mowers the motor doesn't cut off when you let go of the leaver – a very useful feature if you plan to move the lawn mower from one point in the garden to another without cutting slicing up grass and shrubs along the way.

The key differences between lawn tractors and riding lawn mowers is in the geography of the cutting deck. On lawn tractors the cutting deck is mid-mounted, whereas on riding lawn mowers the cutting deck can be found under the front of the vehicle. This front-end location of the cutting deck on riding lawn mowers creates a much more manoeuvrable mower. Manoeuvrability is the key issue when, for example, a landscape is overrun with trees and shrubs. Riding lawn mowers and lawn tractors both come with the ability to carry an enormous range of accessories, from brushes for spring cleaning to snow-removal attachments, a much harder and time consuming issue with conventional mowers.

As with all lawn mowers, caution must be exercised when operating riding lawn mowers and lawn tractors. While providing them with a vehicle may seem like a great way to get the kids to mow the lawn without complaining, only those mature enough to handle heavy equipment should be allowed to operate riding lawn mowers and lawn tractors.

Make sure you pick a mower that is in your price range that falls in line with the needs and the standards that you have given it. Rotary mowers are the most popular lawn mower style across the world. Hopefully that will tell you something positive about your decision. Care for your rotary well and it will still be operational in many years to come.
